Role: Library and Volunteer Coordinator
Main purpose of Job: To manage, grow, and support development of Belfast Tool Library’s volunteer team, unlocking their potential to contribute to the growth of the project; to increase membership and membership income to reach more people and secure the financial sustainability of the project.
Period of Employment: until 31 May 2026, with potential for extension, part-time contract (18.75 hours per week). This post may be extended or made permanent subject to funding, starting as soon as possible.
Salary: £25,000 per annum, pro rata (based on 37.5 hour week)– 23 days annual leave (pro rata) plus 11 statutory days– Pension contribution.
Location: Post will be based at Belfast Tool Library, 116 Shankill Rd, Belfast, BT13 2BD and the majority of hours will need to be completed on site due to the nature of the role. It may be possible to work a small number of hours remotely (eg admin and planning). Some flexible working hours will be possible in this role to be agreed however some evening and weekend work will be required to provide the Belfast Tool Library service.
Job Description:
Customers/Members
● To manage and deliver the plan to increase Tool Library membership, retain existing members and increase membership income as a key strategy to deliver financial sustainability for the project. This will include raising the profile of the project through social media and simple publicity materials, outreach to potential members, partners, and new audiences, developing membership drives and initiatives to increase membership with a target of growing to 1,000 members by mid-2026.
Recruitment & Development of Volunteers
● To recruit, induct, train and support Belfast Tool Library volunteers across all projects
● Develop BTL's volunteer policies, practice and experience to ensure all volunteers have a rewarding experience and feel valued.
● Carry out a skills audit of new and existing volunteers to ensure they can develop their capacity and contribute their expertise to the growth and impact of the project
● Co-ordinate the delivery of training to our volunteers to enhance their skills
● To support opportunities for volunteers to move into new roles and take on greater responsibility within the organisation, with a goal of volunteers managing the day-to-day operations of the library with minimal oversight
● Ensure all volunteers feel welcomed and part of BTL and go on to talk positively about volunteering for the organisation
Communication
● To communicate with our volunteer team, ensure they have what they need to carry out their roles and grow a sense of community and commitment to Belfast Tool Library
● To listen to the views of members and respond to their feedback to improve their experience and our retention of existing members
Relationships/Stakeholders
● To identify opportunities to work with new partners, reach new audiences and other such collaborations with community groups, businesses, and others to contribute to BTL’s strategic priorities, as it relates to growing and broadening the membership of the library. Working closely with the Workshop and Training Coordinator and BTL Trustees, to ensure the safe operation of the tool library and that all volunteer team members have the knowledge and equipment they need to operate safely.
